Toxic introductions in water....?

With much information recently on the levels of non-natural items coursing through our waterways from documented man-made sources - medications, hormones, birth control etc - stuff that we wash through our own bodies that ends up passing through treatment facilities and entering the river systems, there was little mention of what the effect of adding flouride to the Portland water system would have. This was somewhat surprising but was one item that seemed to be missing. In finally remembering to see if there was any effect - the embedded video [all 31 minutes of it] pops up on the internet....

A theme....

New Oregon Species - TIGER MUSKY
While discussing invasive species and other items in the waterways - here's an interesting bit that was published a while back - but is now implemented. Phillips Reservoir was illegally planted with Yellow Perch years ago - became thick in the lake. The answer? Hybridized Tiger Muskie! The non-breeder [sterile] toothed critters are now in the lake for population control - break out the "toothy critter" wire tippet leaders [not just for barracuda anymore!] and have at this new Oregon species.....though might take a few perch and some time!!

Loften Reservoir [Lakeview, OR] to be treated...

Another Chub debacle: Loften Reservoir outside the Lakeview, Oregon area is scheduled to be treated with rotenone again [initial treatment from 1996 did not take] to eliminate the tui chub overpopulation. Until then - take all the fish you can......What is it with these things?

Annual Picnic - Done Deal!

The TVTU picnic came off without a hitch again this year - though the casting course was conspicuously absent without Andy [oops!]. Great weather and better food - thanks to Hank H and Dick H [clack chapter] for doing the grill duties - exceptional preparations guys! Mike and Ron organized the auction and some donations came in [just over $200!! Thanks all participants!] with bounty going out - well done!
Tom Wolf - esteemed man of all things Salem - has returned from the capitol city now that the session is over - Welcome back! And we hope to have a legislative wrap-up soon for everyone...
Finally, a hearty THANK YOU to those who showed up and shared their stories and camaraderie - all told a good time with a couple of newer faces as well.
No photos though - so if you weren't there you don't know what you missed. Maybe next year? We certainly hope so!

And speaking of next year - would a weekend venue be better or not for more attendees? Any other thoughts that kept YOU from being there that we can improve?

Fish Screening Task Force - John Day meet

Something a little different for those concerned with diversions in CO - not certain how the Pizza, Pub or Grill functions will work at 8:30 a.m. but it is an option:

ODFW Fish Screening Task Force to meet in John Day

July 8, 2013

SALEM, Ore. - Oregon's Fish Screening Task Force will meet Thursday, July 18 in John Day at the Outpost Pizza Pub and Grill, 201 West Main Street, John Day, OR 97485.
The meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the agenda includes an update on screening projects and activities throughout Oregon.
The ODFW Fish Screening Program coordinates a cost share program for the installation of screens at water diversions. Fish screens prevent the loss of fish when water is used for irrigation, municipal, hydroelectric or other beneficial purposes. The Task Force is appointed by the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission and its members represent agricultural, fisheries and public interests. It meets several times a year to advise the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife on fish screening policies and issues.
Reasonable accommodations are provided as needed for individuals requesting assistive hearing devices, sign language interpreters or large-print materials. Individuals needing these types of accommodations may call the Information and Education Division at 800-720-6339 or 503-947-6002 at least 24 hours before the meeting.
For more information, call Pete Baki, Statewide Fish Screening Coordinator, at 503-947-6217.
