NOVEMBER at TVTU??

WHAT to EXPECT:  
Business: The Annual Members Meeting of the Tualatin Valley Trout Unlimited Chapter will be held at 7:30 p.m. (social time at 7:00) on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at the Old Market Pub, 6959 SW Multnomah Boulevard in Portland. The agenda will include remarks by the President/Vice President, a financial report by the Treasurer, and the election of Board members. Current Board members eligible for reelection: Alexandria Nguyen-Johnson and Kim Swartz. 
Speaker:  Mark Rogers, Chair of the Oregon Council. Mark should be familiar to all as the tireless advocate and editor/assember of the electronic communications update from OCTU.
Mark will be in person to meet/greet and update everyone of TU in Oregon based on the Oct.  21st meeting of the Council. Mark will provide a recap of the TU national convention (CX3) in Spokane that occurred at the end of September.
WHAT TO BRING: a few bucks for a beverage and dinner from the OMP menus; throw in a few dollars for raffle tickets and your best dinnertime conversation to share with others!

OCTOBER at TVTU??

WHAT TIME: 7:30 p.m. [7:00 socializing!]
WHAT to EXPECT: Liz Perkin, Ph.D., Native Fish Society, Northern Oregon Regional Coordinator.
Previously, Liz worked as an environmental consultant in Calgary, Alberta, a visiting professor in Maryland and Oregon, and a scientific researcher in Vancouver, BC. Liz has a bachelor’s degree in biology from Reed College, a Masters in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences from the University of Washington, and a PhD in River and Riparian Ecology from the Free University of Berlin (Germany). When Liz isn’t working for Oregon’s wild, native fish, she enjoys hiking, cross-country skiing, fishing, horseback riding, painting, and writing children’s stories about nature.
Liz will discuss the work of the Native Fish Society in Oregon and will announce the 2023 call for Wild Fish for All Scholarship proposals. Two students will be selected, and each will be provided with a $1,000 scholarship jointly funded by the Native Fish Society and the Tualatin Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited.

JULY at TVTU??

OUTINGS!

July 16: Clear Lake in Mt. Hood National Forest:

This lake is just off Hwy. 26 on Mt. Hood. This is a day trip, and the hope is that the fishing will hold up well with the wet spring and snowpack. Some floating device is warranted to ease your access.

August 23: Lost Lake in Mt. Hood National Forest:

This Lost Lake is on the north side of Mt. Hood near Hood River - an easy one to find and the most readily accessed. A mid-week day trip as it is a busy spot in the summer. Boats can be rented at the resort if desired. There are big rainbow here!

JUNE at TVTU??

WHAT TIME: 7:00 p.m.; presentation starts about 7:30!
WHAT to EXPECT: Jennifer LaFollette from Royal Treatment. As an ardent, educated and knowing collector of Hardy reels, Jen will be presenting one of her passions and sharing with us all her Basics of Collecting Vintage Hardy Reels. So join your fellow chapter members for some "Hardy" food, "Hardy" drink, "Hardy" conversation and some "Hardy" knowledge....[pun(s) intended]. Plus, you can learn what all your TU Chapter is doing around this area and meet some like-minded folks!!

OUTING!

June 5-9: Timothy Lake at North Arm Campground. The Clackamas Chapter gratefully reserved a number of camp spots early on, so members can show up and pick an empty spot or share with someone else. Fishing there does provide a good opportunity at fish over 20 inches, with a variety of hatches depending on the weather.

New Directors to be Elected

Two persons have been nominated to fill vacant spots on the Chapter’s Board. These two candidates will be voted on at the monthly Chapter meeting at 7 p.m. on June 14 at Old Market Pub, 6959 SW Multnomah Boulevard in Portland. Members may attend the meeting live or on line.

Steve Young has been very active in TU affairs including as President at his former local chapter in Pennsylvania.

Thomas Delegarde brings years of operations, human resources and technology experience to the Chapter.

WHAT to EXPECT: Marc Williamson from Fall River Fishing. Marc was a guide for many years and has been an instructor since 1983. He will be presenting on 'Fishing the Crooked River'. This presentation will dive into the specific patterns and techniques related to the river. ALSO, please note the upcoming OUTINGS schedule including a visit to Fall River!
WHAT TO BRING: a few bucks for a beverage and dinner from the OMP menus; throw in a few dollars for raffle tickets and your best dinnertime conversation to share with others!

UPDATE!

In an effort to provide an increased opportunity for member attendance at the scheduled monthly meetings, the Board recently changed the start times. We hope by doing so, members will find the opportunity to be able to commute to the meeting locations more easily while attending to professional and personal needs!

OUTINGS SCHEDULE!

May 20: Pine Hollow Reservoir near Wamic, OR. This day trip outing is a good early-season destination and provides access to both trout and warm water species.

June 5-9: Timothy Lake at North Arm Campground. The Clackamas Chapter gratefully reserved a number of camp spots early on, so members can show up and pick an empty spot or share with someone else. Fishing there does provide a good opportunity at fish over 20 inches, with a variety of hatches depending on the weather.

July 16: Clear Lake in Mt. Hood National Forest. This lake is just off Hwy. 26 on Mt. Hood. This is a day trip, and the hope is that the fishing will hold up well with the wet spring and snowpack.

September 21-25: Fall River Campground in Deschutes National Forest. The Clackamas Chapter again has thankfully reserved most of the sites in advance, so those attending can pick or share a spot with the group. Bring warm clothes and sleeping gear as nights can get very cold while days are often sunny and mild. Many other close by fishing opportunities also exist.

WHAT to EXPECT: James Fraser from the Clackamas River chapter (CRTU) and the Oregon Council. James is our Oregon TU Policy Advisor. He will be sharing TU's recent achievements in the past legislative session, TU's current involvement in the legislative session, and opportunities for members interested to engage in advocacy.

March at TVTU??

WHAT to EXPECT: Terry Turner; Oregon Council Chair and ODFW Fish Passage Board
This month, Terry will provide us updates on the Super Salmon Highway effort and associated projects. Thanks to our members, TVTU has been a proud supporter of SSH Projects and hopefully will be able to participate in restoring miles of salmon habitat along our coastal river, streams and creeks.
 
The Salmon Super Hwy is a local organization that is committed to restoring stream and river access for fish while also improving habitat and improving recreational opportunities which also help stimulate local economies.

February at TVTU??

 

GENERAL MEETING!
WHEN: Wednesday, February 8, 2023
WHERE: Old Market Pub; Garden Home
WHAT TIME: 6:30 p.m.
WHAT to EXPECT: Christine Buhl; Oregon Department of Forestry
This month we have Christine Buhl, Ph.D. from the Oregon Department of Forestry. Dr. Buhl will be talking about Emerald Ash Borer and the Western Red Cedar die-offs. She will be discussing how the changes to the Willamette Valley's changing riparian zones affect our local fish and their habitat.
Christine is an Entomologist with a B.S. in Environmental Science from Oregon State University and Ph.D. in Entomology. Currently, she is serving as the state Forest Entomologist with the Oregon Department of Forestry providing entomological technical assistance to various landowners and flies aerial surveys of forest damage.
