WHAT to EXPECT: Mike McCoy - Euro Nymphing

Through out the years Mike has been published in numerous magazines and books here and abroad. As owner of Snake Brand Guides, Mike manufactures and supplies components for companies and individual rod builders around the world. Mike has been fortunate to have competed at 2 world championships and several qualifying events for Team USA. The presentation will discuss the history of Euro-nymphing and include techniques used in World Competitions. He will also talk about the flies that are especially effective and how to fish these flies.

WHAT: 2019 Westmoreland Casting Pond Stewardship Day

WHERE: West side of the Westmoreland Casting Pond, SE 22^nd Avenue and Rex Street, just off of McLoughlin Boulevard.

WHEN:  Saturday, March 16^th from 8:30 am until 1200 noon.

WHAT to EXPECT:  Come lend a hand working with the City of Portland Department of Parks and Recreation to clean debris from the pond in preparation for it being filled. The pond is one of the largest casting facilities in the world, and we are fortunate to still have it for public use. Maintenance funds are always in short supply, so our volunteer support is important.

WHAT: Northwest Flytyer and Flyfishing Expo

WHEN: March 8-9, 2019

WHERE: Linn County Expo Center; Albany, Oregon

WHAT TIME: 9:00am - 5:00 pm each day
WHAT to EXPECT: The preeminent gathering of all things fly tying west of the Mississippi! Over 200 fly tyers demonstrating what they do and the why's/how's behind it, fly casting classes and demonstrations, over 60 vendors along with everything else you can think of. Come and mingle with the best of best! Kids welcome!

Talk all you want about so-called “advancements in fly fishing” — ozone hole-depleting fluorocarbon leaders, boron rods with price tags equivalent to your monthly mortgage, and now waders with front zippers so you can relieve yourself while never having to vacate your coveted spot on the river...

Forget the fancy gear! What you really need to catch more trout, salmon or stripers is to get a good-tempered dog, the kind of dog that encourages you to get outside fishing all year long … a fish dog.

A good fish dog doesn't mind....

WHAT to EXPECT: Jonah Sanford - Deschutes River Alliance

Jonah Sanford, Executive Director of The Deschutes River Alliance (DRA) returns with updates on this nonprofit, science-based advocacy organization working to protect and restore the health of the lower Deschutes River. Since its founding in 2013, DRA's robust science program has documented multiple changes in the lower Deschutes, all coinciding with implementation of a new "Selective Water Withdrawal" at Round Butte Dam. These changes include new proliferation of nuisance algae, warmer water temperatures during the spring and summer months, and significant changes in aquatic insect populations and hatch timing. These developments, in turn, have led to impacts to the river's treasured fish populations and flyfishing experience, to birds and other wildlife, and to the economy of north Central Oregon. DRA's science program forms the basis of its outreach and advocacy efforts as DRA seeks to inform the public and advocate forcefully for the protection of this remarkable river. On February 13, representatives from DRA will provide updates on the organization's ongoing science and advocacy work, and look ahead to planned efforts in 2019 and beyond.

C4C - done for the year!

Christmas for Coho collections are done for the year - now we are working on placement programs!

Thanks to all the local TU volunteers, our beloved local fly shop hosts [Royal Treatment and Northwest Fly Fishing Outfitters] and to those who brought in their trees for this important effort; several hundred trees have been collected and stockpiled awaiting placement in sensitive habitat areas on the Clackamas River. We truly are thankful for all the efforts of our numerous volunteers over these two weekends and we look forward to working with everyone again when collection sites and dates are set!

WHAT to EXPECT: Marc Williamson - The Art & Science of Reading Water

Marc will discuss proven techniques for reading rivers through the four needs of all trout. He will define the types of lies that are present in a river as well as illustrate why trout choose the locations that they do.

He will cover some specific situations that you may find in moving water.

Marc writes that his passion for learning has never decreased after decades of working as an educator. Through these years, many lessons have been learned - in particular though, learning must be relevant and fun.
To accomplish that for both the teacher and the student, Marc teaches fly fishing and fly tying and finds it a great opportunity his knowledge. He enjoys seeing people get excited about the first fly they tye, as well as their first cast or that initial double haul.  The joy of learning is a powerful motivator.
Marc began fly-fishing at a young age. His father, and best friend, purchased a JC Higgins fly rod outfit for him that began a lifelong love affair with fly-fishing.
Marc presents to fly clubs and fly fishing shows throughout the Pacific Northwest and Montana and he is a co-founder and the Director of the Northwest Christian Fly Fishing Roundup, a complete fly fishing experience for men.

TREE COLLECTION

January 5th and 12th, 2019

CALL FOR CHAPTER VOLUNTEERS: Thanks to all of you who have been to a meeting or seen the emails and already volunteered! This year our tree collection Saturdays are January 5 and 12! We could use a few good hands to fill slots each day at each location. For those of you who have not yet volunteered and wish to help us out, please let us know your interest by sending an email with preferred location (West Linn or NWFFO), date and shift (a.m. – 9:00 to 12:30 or p.m. – 12:30 to 4:00). We will do our best to accommodate you; if you can, you might include a back-up choice just in case.

NEW THIS SEASON: We now have permission to drop trees on the Sundays (January 6 and 13) directly adjacent to two work sites (McIver Park and Rock Creek Confluence) that will have tree placement work days next summer. That will save a significant amount of extra work; those trees will not have to be taken in January to the Barton storage area and unloaded, and then reloaded and hauled in the summer on the work days. It will take a bit of extra help to unload and move the trees at the two work areas, so if you might be able to help (or at least will be willing to think about it), please let us know.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department recently confirmed the discovery of New Zealand mudsnails in the North Platte River near Casper and the Salt River south of Alpine in the Star Valley, according to a news release.

New Zealand mudsnails are a non-native aquatic invasive species that have spread throughout the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and now persist in several water bodies in northwest Wyoming.

This is the first finding on the North Platte River.

WHAT to EXPECT: Michael Gorman - All Things Nymphing
Michael will cover equipment, flies, techniques, and strategies for trout on rivers and lakes as well as steelhead fishing. Program is based on his book: American Nymph Fly Fishing Guide.
His other books are Steelhead Fly Angling-Guerilla Flyrod Tactics, and Effective Stillwater Fly Fishing. Michael teaches fly fishing at OSU and guides on the Siletz & Nestucca.

WHAT to EXPECT: This Middel Fork trip is something new on the schedule - hope you can make it. The area has been fishing well lately and is a place that perhaps not many people visit but is somewhat close!
