October at TVTU?

Well Fall has arrived - just not quite the rains and cool temps we were expecting - but the trees are definitely thinking about turning colors and so are our anadromous denizens of the state! Last month we heard a bit about searun cutthroats; they should be coming into the rivers hard with some rain - right now most seem to be loitering enthusiastically in the estuaries and tidewaters or holding in deep pools.

Here's a few things you can do to kick off Fall.....

OUTING & CONSERVATION!
WHERE: Metolius River [Central Oregon]; Camp Sherman Campground
WHEN: October 2-4, 2015
WHAT to EXPECT: This is a special event - once again the local Chapters of TU will join on the Metolius River to help with the long standing State Project; enjoy a day of restoration effort, campfire time and  be rewarded with a day of Fishing!
Contact: Dick Hollenbeck of Clackamas River Chapter for the latest!

NEW ADDITION - FUN!
WHERE: Royal Treatment Fly Fishing - West Linn, OR
WHEN: October 3, 2015 - 10:00 a.m.
WHAT to EXPECT: Our friend Joel of Royal Treatment Fly Fishing fame is hosting a “Town Hall Meeting” with newly appointed ODFW Commissioners Bruce Buckmaster and Jason Atkinson. This is your opportunity to help shape the future by sharing your vision of our fish and wildlife management with these gentlemen. I hope you will attend and contribute to this discussion, thus helping change this little piece of the world that is so important to all of us.

If you can be there and have a commentator subject for Mr Buckmaster and Mr Atkinson, Joel asks that you leave a comment on his site - it gives them a chance to be prepared for a good discussion....

GENERAL MEETING!
WHEN: Wednesday, October 14, 2015
WHERE: Lucky Lab Public House [Multnomah]
\
WHAT TIME: 6:30 p.m. Socializing; meeting starts at 7:00 p.m.
WHAT to EXPECT: John Pomplin-"Self-guided Alaska Fly Fishing Adventure"
John will provide his insights into Alaska fishing for silver salmon and the cheap way to get there.
The trip John describes is in Cordova but any of the South Central Alaska towns have similar accommodations. The trick is taking advantage of cheap airfare on Alaska Airlines with their mileage plan, tying your own flies, and being open minded on other ways to fish for Silvers if Mother Nature throws you a curve
WHAT to BRING: a sense of adventure, questions, appetites and friends are all welcome! Food and beverages are available for purchase - second floor banquet room.

For the CALENDAR!
WHEN: Saturday, November 14, 2015
WHERE:
Jackson Armory, 6255 NE Cornfoot Road, Portland [near the Airport!]
WHAT TIME: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
WHAT to EXPECT: Tyers, auctions, friends, stories and more! This annual effort organized by the Fly Fishing Arts & Conservation Society has it all - and is returning stronger for 2015. Remember all proceeds are distributed among local conservation organizations - including TVTU - for designation to beneficial efforts in the State of Oregon.

George shares a YouTube!

For a guy who doesn't do much computering - our friend George [and Board member] seems to be expanding his knowledge. Now he's turned to YouTube to share this bit on fish passage at the North Fork dam on the Clackamas River.

An interesting PGE project...so when you drive by and wonder what that big floating thing is by the dam....you can thank George for the answer!

North Twin to be cleaned.....

of brown bullheads....
ODFW temporarily lifts fishing restrictions at North Twin Lake
Agency plans chemical treatment this fall
Sept. 22, 2015

BEND, Ore. – Effective immediately, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has relaxed fishing restrictions at North Twin Lake (Deschutes County), which is scheduled to be chemically treated this fall to remove unwanted brown bullhead catfish.

The agency plans to treat North Twin Lake to remove the illegally-introduced brown bullhead in order to improve the rainbow trout fishery. Under the temporary regulations now in place, there are no daily bag or possession limits, no size limits and anglers may harvest fish by hand, dip net and angling.

C4C Could Use Your Help!

Christmas for Coho is gearing up!
You may [or may not] have seen the note in the last TVTU Member email about the exciting new tree drop locations for 2016. This program has become a large and effective effort for the Chapter - and it takes hands to get it done. We have seen huge increases in participation through the years and the growth overall of the project! As we roll into this next year w could use some folks to help in a less physical and more mental capacity to help organize and plan:

Committee makeup:  Mike Gentry and Jon Pampush are heading up the program this year and are hoping to get at least five folks [or more if possible] to brainstorm and organize. No experience necessary. Willingness to participate and organize at least one task of the many that need to be coordinated.

Overview:  there are two phases in the process:
  • collection (all the planning, PR, staffing, logistics, etc.)
  • distribution (logistics/stockpiling, staffing, transportation, etc.).
Since we will be placing trees in the Metro (Clackamas) area and at our normal North Coast sites, we’ll be working with the Clackamas and North Coast chapters. We have already contacted and are working with ODFW on local efforts - including this fall.

Meeting Place and Date:  Please contact TVTURESTORATION@GMAIL.COM and let Mike and Jon know of your interest -ask more questions if you have them - there will be a place for everyone and their desires/skills! Meetings will occur in SW Portland - available meeting dates are being set RIGHT NOW!

WHEN: September 16-21, 2015
WHAT to EXPECT: A multi-day trip to one of the most named rivers in central Oregon - come for the full stay or drop-in as you can [the weekend is looking good!]. A multi-day getaway on the Fall River; come and rest up from those first frantic weeks of shuttling the kids to and fro! Temps can be cool so come prepared. Remember this is an overnighter so Saturday night there will be a potluck dinner - straight off the roadkill grill - bring a side dish or dessert and join Andy on his next to last adventure of the season!

End your summer on a high note!

Our friends at WNCTU....

Doug Ray of the Wild North Coast Chapter near Seaside copied us with an email recently - and according to their FACEBOOK page - the Forest Lake dike removal project is complete! Complete enough that the plug placed at the opening may come out within the week [the plug is placed to ensure the trapped water settles and does not introduce excessive silt in the main river].
The last piece - the plug will come out soon!
Doug further notes that more of this type of flood plain restoration/off channel wetland complex habitat restoration....

An update from Tom....

Tom Wolf - OCTU Executive Director
Tom Wolf - our legislative insider - keeps busy in the off-season not only fishing remote waters in wilderness areas but following developments within the state. Included in that is tracking some of the ODFW activities. This past week the commission voted on the 2016 State Fishing Regulations in Seaside - Tom was there and forwarded his thoughts to the TU members:

I attended the ODFW Commission hearing in Seaside yesterday. The main subject was the proposed ODFW 2016 simplified fishing regulations, designed to make regulations easier to understand and more consistent.

A John Day recap.....

Our intrepid adventurer and outing leader has provided us with a bit of a recap of the adventure to the John Day last month....unfortunately, he was the only TVTU member with desires for an expedition and adventure. That means there is no proof of anything he writes...and with only one blurry photo as evidence of catching anything, we'll never know for sure!

Forty Casts and Forty Fish
By Andy Andrews

I arrived to Cottonwood Canyon State park on Friday about 2 pm, set up camp, strung a rod and started to explore the river. I expected to see a river similar to the Crooked but was surprised to see a stream far more clear than I had thought. The year being what is,  water depth was wadable in most of the river near the park. There were expanses of river that were wide (a hundred yards or more) and there were areas that were easy to cast completely across with a little effort. It was not hard to tell that the river was down far from it usually high point. I ventured downstream from the campground.........

September at TVU?

School is back in session and the waters are cooling down. After a bit of rain and a dusting of snow on the mountain things are beginning to look better for fall - we can certainly hope for that!

Now SUPPOSEDLY the fishing restrictions have been lifted for streams in Oregon [remember the time restrictions as of July 18?] - or so the local news said last night; BUT what we can't find is official ODFW news release about that. Might call ahead if you're going to test the cooler waters....

UPDATED - clear as of Sept 1 [but be mindful if things heat back up] - ODFW OFFICIAL news release <<<<< ODFW News >>>>

Now, on to more pressing business.....
