CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS: Looking for willing participants to help us with the 2020 edition of C4C! Thanks to all of you who have volunteered in the past - we hope you found it rewarding. For a shift on our tree collection Saturdays, January 4 and 11, we are in need of volunteers to fill slots each day at each location. For those of you who have not yet volunteered and can do so, please let us know your interest by sending an email with preferred location (West Linn or NWFFO), date and shift (a.m. – 9:00 to 12:30 or p.m. – 12:30 to 4:00). We will do our best to accommodate you; if you can, you might include a back-up choice just in case.

November at TVU?

WHAT to EXPECT: Curt Mykut - "Chicken Creek Restoration" and Annual Meeting
Beginning July 2019, a small tributary stream to the Tualatin River, known as Chicken Creek, will be restored to its natural, curving flow at Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge’s Atfalat’i Unit. The project aims to restore natural stream and wetland floodplain functions, where the realigned creek will feed a portion of the Atfalat’i Units once heavily managed wetland impoundments. Anticipated beaver activity in the restored creek channel will cause water to pond, and in concert with the native vegetation plantings, will result in 280 acres of wetlands and 2 miles of stream habitat supporting a healthy, diverse array of plants, fish and wildlife included our beloved native cutthroats.
This is also the annual State of TVTU meeting with a business update on your chapter as well as Board nominations and elections.

WHAT TO BRING: a few bucks for a beverage and pizza dinner; throw in a few raffle tickets and your best dinnertime conversation to share with others!

October at TVTU?

WHAT TIME: 6:30 p.m. for gathering; activities start at 7:00 p.m.
WHAT to EXPECT: Brian Marz - "Oregon's Flyfishing Mecca" 

In Oregon there are many river valleys with many highways and towns oriented along them. The McKenzie River is no different - the McKenzie Highway follows it, and several towns located within the river valley. Add Maupin where you have a town located at the lower Deschutes, and the culture is all about the river.  The one thing Oregon seems to lack is a hub or mecca for fly fishing [think about Missoula, Montana, and the Clark Fork, Bitterroot, Blackfoot, Rock Creek, etc.].
The city of Oakridge is actually Oregon's Fly Fishing Mecca or Hub, and if you aren't aware of it, you need to come to this month's chapter meeting. Oakridge has been deemed the Mountain Biking Capital of the Northwest, and it needs another title for being the Fly Fishing Mecca of Oregon. Orvis Portland's fishing manager Brian Marz has been fly fishing the Oakridge area for almost 25 years, and he is going to share with you the wide array of options for fly fishing this wonderfully majestic area.

WHAT TIME: whenever you can make it
WHAT to EXPECT: Another trek over to the east side to meet and fish the Crooked River. Expect anything and everything and be prepared for adventure! Please be aware, this trip is subject to cancellation due to weather based on the late season - be sure to contact Andy Andrews (andrewsclga@gmail.com).
WHAT to BRING: about everything you need to camp for the weekend - including being prepared for potential colder temperatures and weather - it can happen! Throw in an extra dish for the Saturday evening potluck and TVTU will provide the entree.

WHAT to EXPECT: J. Michelle Swope - "Cutthroat on the Fly!" 

J. Michelle Swope, owner of Olympia Women on the Fly Guide service, and WI coordinator for Washington State Council of Trout Unlimited will be giving a presentation on Cutthroat. She will cover the emerging studies on these gorgeous, mysterious fish. Spawning, migration, protection, habitat and how can we fish effectively for them in Oregon including her most effective fly pattern for Cutthroat in the salt.

WHEN: Friday, August 9-11, 2019

WHERE: Gold Lake - Gold Lake Campground
WHAT TIME: whenever you can make it
WHAT to EXPECT: A rare visit to this potential gem! Gold Lake is just about 1/4-mile bushwhack from Waldo Lake but it is worlds different requiring a completely different road to access it! A monster bug factory with large native rainbow patrolling, this one has the chance owning all who fish it. Luckily, the brook trout are ever present to keep you busy. So much so - there is no size or number limit on the brook trout. All rainbows, however, are C&R only. No motors. Flyfishing only. Barbless adds to the challenge. A nice small campground completes this 100 acre impoundment of Salt Creek. Contact: Andy Andrews

DIRECTIONS: Head east from Eugene on Hwy 58;continue past the Waldo Lake turnoff/sign but just prior to the Willamette Pass summit and ski area there is a small sign for Gold - you might miss it. The road is a hard acute left up the hill when heading east on the highway. if you get to the ski area - you went too far! The gravel road is a few miles of often rough-potholed track but certainly doable in all vehicles; just be patient, the reward is worth it.

WHAT to EXPECT: Food conversation and whatever else may happen - bring your spouse; friendly pooches on leash are allowed too! No speaker at this annual gathering so bring your best handshake and introductory line - find out who else is a member of TVTU! Just a laid back evening down by the river! The grills will be working overtime so bring an appetite - silent auction will be happening. Might have a couple of casting challenges as well - or maybe personal instruction if you ask nicely! Come join TVTU and our friends of Clackamas River Chapter and the ladies of The Stonefly Maidens for this months gathering!
WHAT to BRING: a no frills event - bring a side dish or dessert to accompany the TVTU provided entree. Have a favorite beverage? Bring it along and introduce someone else to your tastes!

Trout fishing the Deschutes River is not without it's frustrations- come join guide Rob Crandall of Water Time Outfitters as he helps reveal the simple tricks he has found to consistently catch the wild rainbows of this impressive canyon. In this presentation, Rob discusses tricks and tactics of various hatches encountered throughout the season from his 25 years of guiding experience.

The July meeting will be the annual TVTU Picnic at Cook Park in Tigard - right on the Tualatin River. We have another combined meeting with our friends of the Clackamas River chapter as we as the Stonefly maidens! The chapter provides/grills and entree and hopes our members and friends share side dishes from their favorite recipes. Please join us on July 10th!

The fight to save Columbia River salmon could hinge on a major battle taking place in the basin’s biggest reservoir. It pits biologists against a fish: The invasive northern pike.

Northern pike are aggressive. They eat anything in their path – they’ve even been spotted chomping on ducks and bats. That’s bad news for soft-bellied fish, like rainbow trout......
