WHERE: Lucky Lab Public House; Multnomah Village
WHAT TIME: 6:00 p.m.
WHAT to EXPECT: Marc Williamson - "Art & Science of Spring Creeks"

The Art and Science of Fishing Spring Creeks...Marc's first fly fishing experience was on Fall River in Central Oregon.  He says he cut his (fly fishing) teeth on spring creeks.  Spring creeks have always been fascinating to not only to fish, but to understand.  Having fished Fall River for so many years, and having spent so much time learning to read and to fish rivers, he has decided that it would be fun to get more specific and learn more about spring creeks. After a few years of researching spring creeks in general, Marc has decided to share all his research and found knowledge - come, reap his rewards and be a better pursuer because of it!
WHAT TO BRING: a few bucks for a beverage and pizza dinner; throw in a few raffle tickets and your best dinnertime conversation to share with others!

VOLUNTEER!
WHEN: Saturday, January 4th and January 11th, 2020

WHAT to EXPECT: Christmas for Coho Tree Collection

We will be collecting and hauling Christmas trees again this year at NWFFO and Adjacent to Royal Treatment Fly Fishing in West Linn). Trees will be collected on  January 4 and 11 and will be moved and unloaded on January 5 and 12.

Collections staffing on the two Saturdays will be in two shifts, 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  For those willing to help on Saturday collections, please CONTACT MIKE GENTRY and let him know which location, all shifts that would work, and the shift you would prefer. We’ll do our best to give everyone their preference but sometime - thankfully - we have enough interest that first-come first-serve gets the spot! So sign-up early!
For the Sunday tree loading, moving and unloading, we usually need six or seven of us.  We would be meeting at the offload site (TBD) and unloading the trees that were loaded Saturday onto the flatbed at NWFFO, then going to the RTFF location, loading those trees and unloading them at the same or another offload site. The Sundays work usually takes four hours or so.  Again, please LET MIKE KNOW if and when you could help.

Thanks in advance for your help.

GENERAL MEETING!
WHEN: Wednesday, November 13, 2019
WHERE: Lucky Lab Public House; Multnomah Village
WHAT TIME: 6:00 p.m.
WHAT to EXPECT: Curt Mykut - "Chicken Creek Restoration" and Annual Meeting

Beginning July 2019, a small tributary stream to the Tualatin River, known as Chicken Creek, will be restored to its natural, curving flow at Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge’s Atfalat’i Unit. The project aims to restore natural stream and wetland floodplain functions, where the realigned creek will feed a portion of the Atfalat’i Units once heavily managed wetland impoundments. Anticipated beaver activity in the restored creek channel will cause water to pond, and in concert with the native vegetation plantings, will result in 280 acres of wetlands and 2 miles of stream habitat supporting a healthy, diverse array of plants, fish and wildlife included our beloved native cutthroats.
This is also the annual State of TVTU meeting with a business update on your chapter as well as Board nominations and elections.

October at TVTU?

GENERAL MEETING!
WHEN: Wednesday, October 9, 2019
WHERE: Lucky Labrador Public House; Multnomah Village location
WHAT TIME: 6:30 p.m. for gathering; activities start at 7:00 p.m.
WHAT to EXPECT:
Brian Marz - "Oregon's Flyfishing Mecca"
In Oregon there are many river valleys with many highways and towns oriented along them. The McKenzie River is no different - the McKenzie Highway follows it, and several towns located within the river valley. Add Maupin where you have a town located at the lower Deschutes, and the culture is all about the river.  The one thing Oregon seems to lack is a hub or mecca for fly fishing [think about Missoula, Montana, and the Clark Fork, Bitterroot, Blackfoot, Rock Creek, etc.].
The city of Oakridge is actually Oregon's Fly Fishing Mecca or Hub, and if you aren't aware of it, you need to come to this month's chapter meeting. Oakridge has been deemed the Mountain Biking Capital of the Northwest, and it needs another title for being the Fly Fishing Mecca of Oregon. Orvis Portland's fishing manager Brian Marz has been fly fishing the Oakridge area for almost 25 years, and he is going to share with you the wide array of options for fly fishing this wonderfully majestic area.
WHAT to BRING: a friend?

August at TVTU?

Don't forget - AUGUST is your month off; no general member meeting! Go out and use that time to enjoy some of the beautiful bounties our state has to offer - hopefully, it won't be too crowded for your enjoyment!

Speaking of getting out:

CAMPOUTING!
WHEN: Friday, August 9-11, 2019
WHERE: Gold Lake - Gold Lake Campground
WHAT TIME: whenever you can make it
WHAT to EXPECT:
A rare visit to this potential gem! Gold Lake is just about 1/4-mile bushwhack from Waldo Lake but it is worlds different requiring a completely different road to access it! A monster bug factory with large native rainbow patrolling, this one has the chance owning all who fish it. Luckily, the brook trout are ever present to keep you busy. So much so - there is no size or number limit on the brook trout. All rainbows, however, are C&R only. No motors. Flyfishing only. Barbless adds to the challenge. A nice small campground completes this 100 acre impoundment of Salt Creek. Contact: Andy Andrews
DIRECTIONS: Head east from Eugene on Hwy 58;continue past the Waldo Lake turnoff/sign but just prior to the Willamette Pass summit and ski area there is a small sign for Gold - you might miss it. The road is a hard acute left up the hill when heading east on the highway. if you get to the ski area - you went too far! The gravel road is a few miles of often rough-potholed track but certainly doable in all vehicles; just be patient, the reward is worth it.
WHAT to BRING: a float tube, bug spray and a friend if you wish!
Notice who provided the sign.....

The grills will be working overtime so bring an appetite - silent auction will be happening. Might have a couple of casting challenges as well - or maybe personal instruction if you ask nicely! Come join TVTU and our friends of Clackamas River Chapter and the ladies of The Stonefly Maidens for this months gathering!

Northern Pike on the Columbia

A 34-inch long northern pike biologists caught in Lake Roosevelt.                                               Courtney Flatt/Northwest Public Broadcasting.
The fight to save Columbia River salmon could hinge on a major battle taking place in the basin’s biggest reservoir. It pits biologists against a fish: The invasive northern pike.

Northern pike are aggressive. They eat anything in their path – they’ve even been spotted chomping on ducks and bats. That’s bad news for soft-bellied fish, like rainbow trout......

May at TVTU?

GENERAL MEETING!
WHEN: Wednesday, May 8, 2019
WHERE: Luck Lab Public House - Multnomah Village
WHAT TIME: 6:30 pm [meet-n-greet; 7:00 pm meeting start
WHAT to EXPECT: Josh Linn - Salmon Fly, The Ribeye of the Sky

Josh has been fishing the salmon fly hatch for over 20 years. Over that time he’s come up with some tips and tricks to become more successful. His presentation is focused on changing tactics and breaking old habits. Forget what you think about the salmon fly hatch, throw that old play book out, we’re starting over!
MORE on JOSH:
Josh is a native Oregonian who was introduced to flyfishing by his father. Over the years, he has been mentored by a great many anglers and that influence has turned him into a respected angler, guide, and instructor. He has taught hundreds of people to cast and guided many anglers into to their first steelhead.
Josh has spent the better part of the past 20 years chasing steelhead throughout the Pacific Northwest and remote places in the world. During that time he has guided and fished many rivers including the Infamous River X in Alaska, the Deschutes and the Sandy rivers in Oregon as well as more distant locations such as Russia and Los Roques Venezuela.
Over the past decade Josh has worked with major manufacturers such as Rio and G Loomis to develop fly fishing tackle. Recently, Josh held a position at G Loomis as the their National Fly Fishing Sales Manager. Currently, he has a managing role at Royal Treatment Fly Fishing in West Linn. When you are looking for Josh, you will find him in one of two places, the fly shop or on the river chasing steelhead.

DRA announcement

We received a note from our friends at the Deschutes River Alliance and wanted to pass it along; we've been a long time partner of this group and are looking forward to their continued and heightened efforts!

Exciting Transitions at the DRA

Dear Member of the Deschutes River Alliance Community:

In the coming months, you’ll be seeing some exciting changes at the Deschutes River Alliance. We are reorganizing to increase our focus on management for success and growth. Along with the continued growth of our science, legal, and advocacy programs, this reorganization will allow us to place an increased emphasis on public relations. DRA is making these changes to more effectively achieve our mission of protecting the Deschutes River.

These changes come on the heels of our Executive Director, Jonah Sandford, announcing that he will be leaving the DRA to join the Northwest Environmental Defense Center, one of the leading legal advocates for environmental issues in the Pacific Northwest.  Although we hate to see him go, we are probably as excited about this new opportunity for Jonah as the Northwest Environmental Defense Center is.  Jonah has done a tremendous job for the DRA and we know he will be successful in his new position at NEDC.

As we move forward in the next chapter of the DRA, our new Executive Director will be focusing on increasing our capacity in areas...

A blast from the 11 year-ago past....

but still worthy. Everyone should have a fishin' dog at some point in their fishing careers!
P3100005_2_3
photo: Matt O'Connor [from original published story]
Talk all you want about so-called “advancements in fly fishing” — ozone hole-depleting fluorocarbon leaders, boron rods with price tags equivalent to your monthly mortgage, and now waders with front zippers so you can relieve yourself while never having to vacate your coveted spot on the river...

Forget the fancy gear! What you really need to catch more trout, salmon or stripers is to get a good-tempered dog, the kind of dog that encourages you to get outside fishing all year long … a fish dog.

A good fish dog doesn't mind....

February at TVTU?

GENERAL MEETING!
WHEN: Wednesday, February 13, 2019
WHERE: Luck Lab Public House - Multnomah Village
WHAT TIME: 6:30 pm [meet-n-greet; 7:00 pm meeting start
WHAT to EXPECT: Jonah Sanford - Deschutes River Alliance

Jonah Sanford, Executive Director of The Deschutes River Alliance (DRA) returns with updates on this nonprofit, science-based advocacy organization working to protect and restore the health of the lower Deschutes River. Since its founding in 2013, DRA's robust science program has documented multiple changes in the lower Deschutes, all coinciding with implementation of a new "Selective Water Withdrawal" at Round Butte Dam. These changes include new proliferation of nuisance algae, warmer water temperatures during the spring and summer months, and significant changes in aquatic insect populations and hatch timing. These developments, in turn, have led to impacts to the river's treasured fish populations and flyfishing experience, to birds and other wildlife, and to the economy of north Central Oregon. DRA's science program forms the basis of its outreach and advocacy efforts as DRA seeks to inform the public and advocate forcefully for the protection of this remarkable river. On February 13, representatives from DRA will provide updates on the organization's ongoing science and advocacy work, and look ahead to planned efforts in 2019 and beyond.
