Tree placement_Success!

Special thanks to Sean Cook, Tom Stringfield, Mike Dahlstrom, Ken Kawaiwaiaea, Jeff Price, and Kim Swartz for helping out this past Sunday, June 5th placing trees at the Chicken Creek restoration project on the grounds of the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge. Special thanks also to Mike Gentry for leading the effort and getting us all in place to be able to partake in this project! Also, special thanks to Carly Hirschmann the habitat specialist with FWS who wrangled us all into place.

Tree Placement Opportunity

Mike Gentry is wrangling some assistance for the first of a number of tree placement efforts - we could use your help; need about 5 or 6 more folks for a short few hours effort:

VOLUNTEER!
WHEN: Sunday June 5, 2022
WHERE: Tualatin River NWF

WHAT TIME: 9:00 a.m.
WHAT to EXPECT: 

Check with Mike for details but we will be placing about 60-70 trees it sounds like; all on the TRNWR site where we have been assisting for a few years in restoration efforts. This should only be  few hours of light effort - haul some trees, stake some trees - staff will be on hand to give pointers and direct placement.

WHAT TO BRING: work gloves and work boots; things are still muddy so bring the most appropriate points and throw in your waders just to have them on hand in case it would be helpful! Mike has more details.

Notice of Special Meeting of Members

Official Chapter business for June - please take notice [pun not intended because the lawyers on the board will probably look at this author cross-eyed for not being on the level]:

Notice is given that a TVTU Chapter Special Meeting of Members will be held for the purpose of voting on amendments to the Chapter’s Bylaws. The virtual meeting will be held on June 28, 2022 at 6:00 p.m.; join the meeting through the ink that will be provided in that months The Trout Line newsletter.

 

The proposed substantive amendments are as follows:

• Providing for a 2/3 vote by the Chapter’s Board members in attendance at any Board meeting in order to remove any Officer. This amendment is to conform the Chapter Bylaws to the current TU Model Bylaws provision.
• Providing that the Board will elect its Officers at the Board meeting following the Annual Members Meeting, from nominations made by the Nominating Committee. This amendment is to provide that the Board rather than the Members elect the Officers.
• Providing that the President and Treasurer sign all checks over $500. This amendment is to raise the dual signature amount from the current $200 figure.
• Providing that all Officers are limited to two consecutive two year terms in the same office but can hold the same office again after a one year period out of office. This amendment is to conform the Chapter Bylaws to the current TU Model Bylaws provision.
• Providing that the Chapter’s fiscal year runs from April 1 to March 31. This amendment is to conform to the changed fiscal year adopted by TU.
• Providing that the quorum for any Members meeting at which the Bylaws are amended is the lesser of thirty Chapter members or ten percent of the Chapter’s membership. This amendment is to conform the Chapter Bylaws to the current TU Model Bylaws provision.

For the most part, the board is updating the by-laws to better align with recent modifications for operations implemented by TU National as explained above. The exception is the dual check signing provision that the board feels better aligns with efficiency in monthly payments to meeting venues and speakers which have both seen cost increases. That is all.

Our friends at DRA will come and give us an update of the progress, conditions and activities related to our beloved Deschutes River. They will also let us know where it goes from herel!
The Deschutes River Alliance is a science-based advocacy organization seeking collaborative solutions to the threats facing the Wild and Scenic Deschutes River and its tributaries. We advocate for cooler, cleaner water, a healthy ecosystem, and the recovery and protection of robust populations of resident and anadromous fish.
DRA has a simple vision - a lower Deschutes River that is the confluence of a healthy ecosystem, sustainable economy and vibrant community.
Executive Director Sarah Cloud has a career in the non-profit sector that spans more than thirty years. It has included a position as part of the mediation firm that worked with the Hanford Advisory Board, developing and executing outreach campaigns for organizations such as the Citizens’ Utility Board and working in development. In her position prior to DRA, she was instrumental in creating and executing a strategic plan focused on growth..

OMP Update: I happen to drive past OMP the other day - they have a drop box and storage/construction box on site so it appears they are in the midst of repairs from their fire; word is they will be back for July.

WHAT to BRING: about everything you need to camp for the weekend; also a floating device for fishing or the ability to talk your way onto someone elses as deckhand!

That's right - A CHANGE! Unfortunately, our new venue - Old Market Pub - has had to close temporarily due to a building fire. Though they plan on reopeneing as soon as they can - that will not happen prior to out APRIL MEMBER MEETING.....Bummer for sure since we were just going to get back in the swing of things! But not all is lost - since we already have the speaker scheduled for a virtual presentation - we'll just go with the flow and make the whole thing virtual!

The Oregon Council of Trout Unlimited and TVTU invite you to a combined in-person and Zoom presentation outlining TU’s campaign to remove the four lower Snake River dams. This is an opportunity to hear the reasons this is being pursued, how TU is advocating for it and how you can help. This is a live program where you can ask questions and get answers. Eric Crawford is TU’s North Idaho Field Coordinator. He came to TU following a lengthy tenure with Idaho Fish and Game and an avid angler with a mean looking spey cast. He knows the Snake River basin, the issues and the science.

WHAT TO BRING: you can't bring anything except a beverage to the couch with your device - and lift it in spirit with the rest of us!

WHAT TIME: whenever you can make it
WHAT to EXPECT: Annual trek over to the east side to meet and fish on the annual South Twin event. This has become one of the more popular outings and for good reason - come see why! Expect anything and everything and be prepared for adventure.

WHAT to BRING: about everything you need to camp for the weekend - including being prepared for potential colder temperatures and weather - it happens in spring in Oregon!

Member Meetings - UPDATE!

 

We recognize everyone wants to get out and about again - the TVTU Board does as well! With things looking up, the Board has decided to try and start meetings again in APRIL! Along with that plan, the Board voted to CHANGE MEETING LOCATIONS - we did this due to concerns and input for lack of access to the second level of our prior meeting location.

After some great suggestions and significant investigation by various Board members - we have also voted to give the OLD MARKET PUB a try as our new meeting location! OMP is in Garden Home - about 2.0 miles west from the Lucky Lab Public House in Multnomah Village. Hit Multnomah Blvd and head directly west to our new spot.

Meeting schedule remains second Wednesday each month [except July and August]; start to gather at 6:30 and the formal meeting will start at 7:00 pm. Just like our former venue, we have a dedicated staff member serving our needs in the meeting room where you can order from the FOOD and BEVERAGE MENUS. A bonus for us, all monies spent on food/drinks will be discounted against our monthly room rental fee - dollar for dollar!

C4C - done for 21/22!!

 

Thanks again to all the volunteers and all those who brought trees to be ecocycled into fish habitat! We had another successful year on this restart for the project - lots of interested folks who were pleased to be providing repurposed Christmas trees for fish habitat!

First weekend went very well - over 300 trees collected - thanks to all the volunteers as well as the public who helped out; LOTS of future fish habitat was collected and stockpiled! Can't wait until spring to place these:
