It's nearly that time again!

Christmas for Coho
TREE COLLECTION
January 5th and 12th, 2019
9am-4 pm

CALL FOR CHAPTER VOLUNTEERS: Thanks to all of you who have been to a meeting or seen the emails and already volunteered! This year our tree collection Saturdays are January 5 and 12! We could use a few good hands to fill slots each day at each location. For those of you who have not yet volunteered and wish to help us out, please let us know your interest by sending an email with preferred location (West Linn or NWFFO), date and shift (a.m. – 9:00 to 12:30 or p.m. – 12:30 to 4:00). We will do our best to accommodate you; if you can, you might include a back-up choice just in case.

NEW THIS SEASON: We now have permission to drop trees on the Sundays (January 6 and 13) directly adjacent to two work sites (McIver Park and Rock Creek Confluence) that will have tree placement work days next summer. That will save a significant amount of extra work; those trees will not have to be taken in January to the Barton storage area and unloaded, and then reloaded and hauled in the summer on the work days. It will take a bit of extra help to unload and move the trees at the two work areas, so if you might be able to help (or at least will be willing to think about it), please let us know.

Thank you to all our all our great TVTU volunteers for helping out! If you want to lend a hand contact TVTUrestoration@gmail.com and let us know!

For some of you travelers.....

Don't forget to really clean that gear after your adventures! [Passed on from the Moldy Chum]

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department recently confirmed the discovery of New Zealand mudsnails in the North Platte River near Casper and the Salt River south of Alpine in the Star Valley, according to a news release.

New Zealand mudsnails are a non-native aquatic invasive species that have spread throughout the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and now persist in several water bodies in northwest Wyoming.

This is the first finding on the North Platte River.

OUTING UPDATE!!!

If you are considering going to Miller Lake for the TVTU Campouting this weekend - please CONTACT ANDY ANDREWS regarding his plans; he has concerns for the layer of forest fire smoke coming in from the fires in northern California. The air quality is reported to be diminishing especially in the Klamath County and surrounding areas and CANCELLATION of the campouting is a possibility.

CAMPOUTING!
WHEN: August 10-13, 2018
WHERE: Miller Lake - Digit Point Campground
WHAT TIME: whenever you can make it
WHAT to EXPECT:
This 600+ acre lake outside of Chemult is home to many unique things for Oregon - first, it is one of two lakes in the state where night fishing is allowed for cold-water species! Second, Miller has a reputation for some very large fish - especially nocturnal brown trout! If you have never been - it is worth going at least once - and why not with people who have been there before! Be prepared, the lake is at the end of just over 12-miles of variable gravel road and like most of our high desert lakes, has a reputation for mosquitoes and high-winds [though, my most recent three trips there - only one had significant mosquitoes and only one had significant winds - and that was the same trip so the wind blew the mosquitoes away!].
DIRECTIONS: head south on Hwy 97 and turn west on Deer Creek Road/FS 9772 just before the Ranger Station north of Chemult [about 1-mile]; follow for a bit over 12-miles until it ends at the lake.
WHAT to BRING: a float tube, bug spray, a side dish for the potluck on Saturday and a friend if you wish!

Afternoon closures.....Umpqua

Anglers: 2 p.m. emergency angling closure for North Umpqua River begins
Closure affects fly water area through September 30.
Thursday, August 2, 2018

ROSEBURG, OR. – Beginning Monday, August 6, angling the North Umpqua River fly area is closed from 2 p.m. to one hour before sunrise. The closure extends from the fly area boundary at Deadline Falls to the marker below Soda Springs Dam near the power plant enclosure and is in effect through September 30.

This emergency regulation aims to protect wild summer steelhead in the fly waters of the upper North Umpqua River. Exceptionally low flows and higher water temperatures at this time of year combined with preliminary data indicating the wild summer steelhead run may be below average prompted fishery managers to enact the closure.

An emergency regulation was set last week in the mainstem Umqpua River to protect native fish seeking cooler water at tributaries.

Tips for hot weather angling:
  • Fish during the cooler early mornings.
  • Land your fish quickly to help increase survival rates.
  • Keep your fish in at least six inches of water while releasing it.
  • Revive the fish before release. Keep the fish upright facing into the current; if the current is slow, move the fish back and forth slowly to help oxygenate the gills

Umpqua Emergency Regs.....

Anglers: emergency restrictions now in effect for Umpqua River
Wednesday, July 25, 2018

ROSEBURG, Ore – Effective immediately, an emergency regulation protects wild summer steelhead and early returning fall chinook on the mainstem Umpqua River.

Emergency regulation, Scottsburg Bridge (Hwy. 38) to River Forks Boat Ramp:
Today through September 30, 2018, angling is prohibited within a 200 feet radius of all tributaries in the Umpqua River and in the tributaries themselves from the mouth to 200 feet upstream. This regulation is in effect from Scottsburg Bridge to River Forks Boat Ramp.

This emergency regulation protects wild summer steelhead and fall Chinook salmon that hold in and around tributaries looking for colder water. Currently, the Umpqua River has abnormally low flows and high water temperatures due to drought conditions.

“The Umpqua River at Elkton was 79 degrees this morning, and we know that temperature will be higher in the late afternoons. We believe the closure is needed to help protect our native fish that use these areas of cooler water,” said Greg Huchko, Umpqua District fisheries biologist. “Salmon and steelhead begin to have a tough time when water temperatures reach the upper 60’s, and we aren’t seeing a cooling trend any time in the near future.”

This emergency regulation was also in effect in late June 2015 and had public support.

Tips for hot weather angling:
  • Fish during the cooler early mornings.
  • Land your fish quickly to help increase survival rates.
  • Keep your fish in at least six inches of water while releasing it.
  • Revive the fish before release. Keep the fish upright facing into the current; if the current is slow, move the fish back and forth slowly to help oxygenate the gills.

And so it begins....

Umpqua River anglers: hot weather fishing tips
Wednesday, July 18, 2018

ROSEBURG, Ore – With the Umpqua River water temperature at 79 degrees today near Elkton, anglers are encouraged to practice hot weather ethical angling. The North Umpqua River temperature was 74 degrees this morning at Winchester Dam.
Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife biologist Evan Leonetti offers these tips for anyone fishing for salmon and steelhead in the Umpqua River during hot weather:
  • Fish during the cooler early mornings.
  • Land your fish quickly to help increase survival rates.
  • Keep your fish in at least six inches of water while releasing it.
  • Revive the fish before release. Keep the fish upright facing into the current, and if the current is slow, move the fish back and forth slowly to help oxygenate the gills.
  • Please avoid angling in areas where fish are vulnerable while they are seeking cooler water.
“Steelhead and chinook salmon are dealing with low river flows and higher water temperatures, so we really appreciate anglers helping the fish out by following these tips,” Leonetti said. “Our hot weather is expected to continue.”

Not bad to start thinking about this for all your fishing from here on out....

Citing costs, U.S. House votes to halt additional water spills for salmon

Breaching the four Lower Snake River Dams would require an act of Congress under legislation that passed the U.S. House of Representatives today.

The bill, sponsored by Reps. Cathy McMorris Rodgers and Dan Newhouse,R- Wash., would block spilling of additional water over the dams, which was recently ordered by the court to help young salmon and steelhead migrate to the ocean. Any modifications to the dams’ operations would be halted for about five years, unless Congress specifically authorized changes to power production or Snake River navigation.

House Resolution 3144 recognizes the dams’ contribution to the Northwest economy and provides certainty to irrigators, barge operators and the region’s electric ratepayers, the sponsors said during a conference call.

Additional spills of water over the dams to aid fish costs about $40 million yearly in lost power production, which affects rates for families and businesses, Newhouse said.

“Salmon and dams can co-exist,” McMorris Rodgers said. “That’s a story we need to continue to tell.”....

Since the season is nearly upon us...

a refresher on C&R...but with a slightly different agenda/perspective:

Instagram Is Killing Fish

[aka One creature’s selfie is another creature’s suffocation.]

Sometimes, when I start losing faith in humanity, I cheer myself up by perusing the latest casualty reports that result from people taking selfies at inopportune moments. It’s not that I wish harm on anybody. But so long as the Lords of Karma hold that someone needs to get kicked in the shorts, such a fate might as well befall those who truly deserve it. If you take the Darwinian long view, what could be considered a tragic loss for Mom and Dad and Sis (when Buddy takes an Instagram snap of himself licking the third rail at the Acela station), is probably a net gain for the gene pool.....

Laurance Lake is CLOSED for 2018..

Laurance Lake and it's associated campground [Kinnikinnick], located on the north flank of Mt Hood near Parkdale, are CLOSED for 2018. They are doing some renovations on the dam/spillway system and will be drawing the lake down low enough it may cause some stress for fish - especially later in the summer. Native bull trout, cutthroat trout and wild rainbows all inhabit the waters there.

Wonder if this applies to the ospreys and bald eagles that make that area home? Always entertaining to have them arguing each other over hunt territories.

Keep the closure in mind for any trips you were planning for 2018!
