Summer recap....

With winter here and the holiday season nearing completion - lets go back and enjoy a warm summer camp day:
Lees Falls - Summer Camp 2015
Tualatin Valley Trout Unlimited - Tualatin Riverkeepers Summer Fish Camp 2015
By Mark Rogers

Tualatin Valley Trout Unlimited (TVTU) and Tualatin Riverkeepers (TRK) joined together to provide fly fishing experience for 20 - ten to thirteen year old day campers from throughout the west metro region. The camp was a week long effort centered in Tigard.

At Dirksen Nature Park in Tigard the kids enjoyed steam-side discussion and in the creek experience learning in stream ecology, chemistry and the water cycle. Activities included temperature, turbidity and getting your socks wet. The campers returned to the creek and collected macro invertebrates, crawdads and sculpin – learning more about a water based web of life.

The future conservationists were also led by TVTU members Jim Fenner and Mark Rogers in an introductory fly fishing class – that also happened to include side bars on the protection of nature, especially fresh water habitats. The learning continued as Jim and Mark shared a small stream fly box with fly comparisons to the actual critters collected in Summer creek and how anglers seek to mimic the trout's natural food. Standard forward and roll casts were practiced with bright orange hook-less woolly buggers. The demonstration ended creek side a description of our home Tualatin River watershed and the importance of cooperation, safety and following the rules when on the water.
Mike G guides the young flyfishers....
After a week of daily activities on the Tualatin the final found the day campers, TRK staff and TVTU volunteers - Mike Gentry, Peter Gray and Mark Rogers - walking the gravel road along the upper Tualatin River to Lee Falls. It was blessedly cool, for August, as we split the group half to hike on to the falls and half to fish below the side road bridge. The groups rotated at half time. This little known part of the river runs through a dense riparian buffer of maple, alder, Douglas fir, western red cedar, pacific yew and an occasional poison oak where it remains cool. Young coho and small cutthroat are well fed in the pools and riffles. Applying learned casting techniques, the now quite proficient campers coached several fish to their elk hair caddis and parachute Adams offerings.
Mark R lends a mend.....
A wonderful fun group of kids, enthusiastic volunteers and staff, a fine warm summer day on our beautiful namesake Tualatin River can only be reckoned a great success.
Reading the waters....
Consider joining us next summer for kids, fun and fishing - a few more hands on the river would be helpful and rewarding!
Smiles for all!

Tenkara?

Erle - esteemed Pres - passed along this little show about Tenakara fishing - straight from Dave Hughes who has been a presenter at TVTU meetings in the past. If the rain has you down - know that Erle has you taken care of with some in-house video watching!

[HINT: you might try opening the link video in Internet Explorer if it won't work for you].

Oregon Field Guide
Tenkara

An ancient simple form of fly-fishing from Japan has become popular in US. Tenkara rods have no reel, a short but extendable rod and a fixed length of light line. Fans say it makes fly fishing possible even on small mountain streams.

Elliott Forest....

Elliott Forest between Reedsport and Coos Bay  photo: Forest Web.org
Tom Wolf wrote in and gave a quick update not on the much contested and debated transfer of the Elliott State Forest; Oregon Trout Unlimited remains interested in the outcome due to the effect such areas have on cold, clean, fishable waters in our state:

In the Elliot Forest Transfer process, Dec. 15 was the date that groups had to write an expression of interest in order to keep involved in trying to find a solution for Elliot state forest. OCTU has sent in a letter of interest - all this means is we still are involved in process. I have attached <<LINKED BELOW>> the Elliot Transfer process and the OPB article below.

This is very early in the process and now we must work for solution that insures the protection of streams , wild salmonids and their habitats within the Elliot. I will keep you involved and informed as process moves forward.

Contact me if you have questions.

New Scenic Waterways??

Our esteemed Tom Wolf let us know that the Oregon Council of TU supported a designation of the Chetco and Mollala Rivers as SCENIC. This has some great effects on those areas if passed....the Grande Ronde River was rejected.

Scenic status recommended for Oregon’s Molalla and Chetco rivers

Mateusz PerkowskiCapital Press
The Oregon Water Resources Commission approved scenic designations for the Molalla and Chetco rivers, which may restrict water rights and land uses if finalized.

Oregon’s Molalla and Chetco rivers are one step closer to state designations as scenic waterways, which could limit new water rights and restrict land uses along their shores.

The Oregon Water Resources Commission voted on Nov. 20 to recommend the scenic river designations to Oregon Gov. Kate Brown, who is expected to make a decision in January 2016.

If Brown approves the designations, they can still be overturned by state lawmakers if they pass legislation reversing the actions.

Oregon hasn’t designated any new scenic rivers since 1988, but state agencies now plan to evaluate nominations on a regular basis, said Chris Havel, associate director of the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department......

December at TVTU?

One down and one to go! With any luck you all had great Thanksgiving holidays and are all safely back without any regrets over that extra piece of pie you ate....

Temps are back to where we expect - or a smidgen cooler even; and so is our rain. Hard to believe it was not all that long ago that we barely had any warm water left in our local streams. Hopefully, this will not repeat and the snow will continue to fall into the new year.

As we hurdle toward the Christmas season - take some time and join TVTU this month.....here's what you can look forward to:
