July Picnic/Fundraiser - COOK PARK!

Hey Members! Hopefully you are at Timothy Lake this weekend.....but if you are not...or if you are just seeing this post....please note our July Member Meeting is the annual TVTU picnic at Cook Park! So to avoid being a lone show at the Lucky Lab come to the Tigard Park with our friends from Stonefly Maidens and Clackamas River Chapter for an evening of socializing. The meeting will include a small silent auction fundraiser [if you have something to donate for the auction LET US KNOW! ] and a casting course to test your skills [bring your favorite stick or bum one to test your skills - or try for a finned resident of the creek!]. It is a potluck affair as well - TVTU provides the entre - YOU get to bring your favorite side or dessert dish [and trust me - nobody attending is so finicky as as to turn down favorites so do not be afraid!].
Look for us down by the river under the covered picnic shelter no. 3 [park map].

Hope to see you at Cook Park in July!

Don't forget Timothy!

2009 Timothy Lake Trip
Timothy Lake this weekend! An epic adventure with a history all it's own for Tualatin Valley and Clackamas River chapters - voted as a DON'T MISS! Andy will be at the North Arm Campground [new and improved] tonight - look for the red TVTU flag around spot #2.
Filter in as you can this weekend as the trip is scheduled for Fri - Mon - you can swing by on Saturday or Sunday if that is all your schedule allows [TU entre with member potluck side dishes on Saturday]! It's a rather aloof group so no rules apply (a RSVP with Andy would be appreciated though)!

Oregon TU new hire - Intro!

Tom Wolf in a recent email and at the State Council meeting this last week let us all know that Oregon TU has hired someone in SW Oregon whom TU believes is going to be an outstanding representative for TU. Dean Finnerty is someone you may have heard of. He comes with a letter of reference from none other than the legendary Frank Moore, whom he considers a surrogate grandfather. Dean is a life-long sportsman, a fishing and hunting guide who has guided in many of the places you all know and love, and is a retiring police officer for the city of Cottage Grove. In short, the ideal candidate.
We can't be happier than to have found Dean and we are going to do good things for cold water fisheries in the state of Oregon with him on the Team! Please welcome Dean.

Speaking of the future, I've recently accepted an amazing job offer from Trout Unlimited.  I begin immediately working full time for TU as the new Southwest Oregon field representative for the Sportsman's Conservation Project.  I'll be working with a wide variety of stakeholders on issues related to high quality habitat for Salmon, Steelhead, Trout, Deer, Elk and other wildlife throughout the region.  I'll be primarily focused on working with groups on the "Copper/Salmon Wilderness area" in the upper Elk River Water Shed as well as the "Elk River Salmon Enhancement Area" (ERSEA) near Port Orford, Oregon.  I'll also be working on the "O&C Lands" issues as that legislation moves forward in the coming months.

Dean starts July 1 - welcome Dean!

Timothy Lake outing - June 28-July 1

Timothy Lake outing is on tap for NEXT WEEKEND!! This is a long-standing and tour de force outing in the TVTU/Clackamas Chapter roster of adventures.
Instead of trying to come up with something new to entice you, or ruining stories of past adventures to the North Arm Campground with fellow TU'ers that will no doubt be regaled again, we are rewinding the wayback clock to a time in the somewhat relatively recent past [depending on one's perspective] and linking a post from our esteemed member and former president Hank Hosfield. If there is any inkling of which event to attend this year - Timothy Lake should be on your list of the top 3 on the calendar. Without further ado:

CLICK for TIMOTHY LAKE

I cannot attest to the campground prices noted in that 2009 article [no doubt they have gone up] but coincidentally it appears Andy Andrews [our chief organizer] will be making this his first trip again to Timothy as he was somewhat hamstrung for the earlier trips this year - do look for the Road Kill Grill and some equally appetizing entree meal during the weekend [bring a potluck dish to add side choices]. Contact Andy for added info or a courtesy RSVP.

In an email ACTION ALERT from TU, there is movement to try and advance the hearings on the Klamath Basin water discussions. Complete with contacts and forms ready to go you can be involved in urging progress on this important topic - there are many voices involved but equitable solutions should be attainable for all:

Tom Wolf - recommended read:

Ted Williams, a very good conservation writer, has this article in "Fly Rod and Reel" concerning suction dredge mining.

Good article. Tom

Mt Hood Hike-in Trip - May 11

Mt Hood Hike-in Lake
Took a quick hike-in fishing trip up to the 4200’ level on the flank of Mt Hood Saturday the 11th of May – both fortunately [for the hiking] and unfortunately [for the forest] there is no snow at that elevation. This was to the SE flank of the mountain just of Hwy 35 – a lake that is stocked by air with fingerling trout.
